New Knitty, Stuff to Oggle

July 5th, 2006 (03:21 pm)

I feel: bouncy

New Knitty is up today, and while most of the patterns are "eh" at best, there's plenty of good things to find in the sections I don't normally look at. I usually don't read the articles, for whatever reason, but they started a KnittySpin section last issue, and now that I also spin, I decided to see what they had to offer. And that kind of spun (pun not intended, honestly) into me reading other stuffs.

Starting with the KnittySpin, apparently there was an outdoor spinning event in NYC a little over a week ago, which I was disappointed to find that I'd missed out, until I realized it was on the 24th of June, and I would have had to miss it anyway because of Kyle's graduation. And I totally sympathize with the organizer about the rain. I don't think it's rained so much in one day in years.

I also read about how those coily things are made when spinning. I've been curious about them ever since I saw them in the Hello Yarn Flickr stream. Someday, when I get my wheel, I'll have to try it. And yes, I want a wheel. :D

And then, I took a turn towards "Cool Stuff" where I found a knitting bag that looks really awesome. That led me to the website for the company that makes that bag, and OMG. Needles, bags, needle cozies, cases, shit. <3

That's where I am so far, although I'm probably going to delve further.

Regarding this issue's patterns I like the following: Fetching, Maze, Swell, and Crosspatch, although different colors would do. To me, all the socks are socks. I want to make socks, but none of those really stand out to me. I've also seen the split toe socks done better, although I can't remember where.

Happy Kitty

July 3rd, 2006 (03:03 pm)

I feel: better
now playing: Love and Mathematics - Broken Social Scene

I am a happy kitty today. I finally felt good enough to tackle my tangled, twisted, knotted mess of singles that got pulled off my spindle last weekend. Gentlemen, BEHOLD!

All better.

A Word of Advice

June 24th, 2006 (10:09 pm)

I feel: fuck things

Don't ever leave your any projects in an area where it may be possible, however unlikely, for a child to get ahold of it and utterly destroy it.

Spun Greenery singles part 1 got unwound, molested, knotted, and eventually broken as I tried to rewind the singles around the shaft of my spindle. With the singles broken, I have no idea what to do other than to shove the mess back into my spinning box where everything probably should have been in the first place (but wasn't since I'd relocated most of my crafting activities to the basement since Louis and I were down there a lot) and just start again. It just pisses me off to lose 3 days of work plus the fiber used. It wasn't a lot of fiber, but I only had one braid of the Greenery to begin with, so it's precious. Not to mention the money I spent on it, which is equally, if not more precious.

I don't really think I want to touch my spinning for a while. It's just too fucking depressing.

I feel: sleepy

I got my wools today.

I've already started spinning the blue/green one, which is coming out really nice and thin. I should definitely get a worsted-ish weight yarn this time, assuming I can maintain this thinness. And I think I can.

I'm also working on some quilting stuff. I picked out a square pattern in one of the books I borrowed from the library, and I'm using that to make a modified version of a bag I saw in one of the other books. It's coming along, but it's definitely slow-going by hand. It's not really the sewing that frustrates and bores me, though. It's all the measuring and remeasuring (because I can't cut straight) that I have to do. It reminds me of perspective projects from my art classes, and I hated those. That's not to say I don't like quilting, but it's definitely not that high on my list of crafty activities. I'd rather be spinning, knitting, or (attempting) crocheting (assuming I can read a pattern), probably in that order.

I want the Stitch & Bitch Happy Hooker crochet book, Spin Off magazine, and the Interweave Crochet magazine (Interweave Knits isn't any great shakes this quarter). Buy me it.

Now I'm finally sleepy, so I'll go to bed.

Not so soft

June 15th, 2006 (12:44 pm)

I feel: sleepy

Forgot to mention, I tried knitting with my handspun on size 13 needles. It's a no-go. I'm not exactly sure if it's just the needle size is too small, or if the yarn itself is just far too heavy to make anything pretty, wearable, and nonfelted.

So, a note for future spinning, spin small and thin.

I still have to try the second skein to see if that one works up any better. If not, I'll probably just store the yarn for now.

Ooh Ooh

June 14th, 2006 (04:53 pm)

I feel: wool

I bought more wool. :D

I went a little "crazy" although I really don't see it that way. Is 12oz of fiber crazy?

Anyway, purchased from Hello Yarn:

1 braid (i.e. 4oz) of

and 2 braids (i.e. 8oz) of
(having trouble with posting the images, or even saving them, so try those links instead o_O)

Can't wait to get it and spin some more. I'm totally hooked on this. :D

I also attempted crochet again. No photos, but I think I'm actually getting the hang of it. I need to use books for reference, a lot more than for knitting, but I can manage. I just find crochet written instructions pretty confusing. I don't think that they're as clear and easy to understand as knitting instructions. When I was at the library earlier today, I picked up another crochet book to see if I have some better luck with this one. We'll see.

I also grabbed some spinning and quilting books. Quilting is the next frontier in my crafty adventures. :D Actually, it was supposed to come before spinning... I never really saw myself taking on spinning anytime before I was out of college, but I was wrong. So, I'll be educating myself on quilts and sewing.

I feel: cheerful

I completely finished spinning the yarn over the weekend, but I had to wait for the yarn to dry after I set the twist. Here are some pictures.

I'm happy with the way it came out. It's good for my first attempt at spinning, and I definitely learned a lot in the process. The yarn came out thicker than I wanted (some people are comparing it to rope), but I did a better job making thinner singles in the latter parts of spinning.

I still have some singles left over, but not enough to spin a full skein with them. I might take out some of the extra twist and set the singles as is and knit something small with them. I'm not sure yet, although maybe I'll try making something felted with them. I'd hate for them to go to waste or just sit. I might as well try another new thing with my leftovers. We'll see, I guess.

Yarn Turds

May 30th, 2006 (09:06 pm)

I feel: busy

Just another picture to show where I'm at on my spinning.

I rolled those into balls tonight, and they're not really even in size. I've still got about half a bag of wool left, so we'll see what else I get with that. Hopefully something that matches these two balls, to make plying easy.
